A Primer on the Patent System

This seminar provides an overview of the patent system, with an emphasis on the US system, for people with science and/or engineering backgrounds. Topics covered include common misconceptions; basic terminology; sources of law and some history; types of patents, patentable subject matter and types of inventions; the three basic requirements for patentability; basics on patent applications; patent infringement; patent licensing; international issues; and useful websites and publications. The presentation focuses on those aspects of these topics that technical and business people in science and/or engineering related research or industry would likely encounter in their work. A brief overview on jobs in the patent field will also be presented.
