Professor Richard V. Calabrese

Prof. Calabrese’s expertise is in the areas of turbulent mixing and multiphase flow, with emphasis on drop dispersion & coalescence, prediction & measurement of particle size distribution and prediction & measurement of velocity fields in stirred vessels, high shear mixers and other process equipment. He is the author of more than 45 publications and has given more than 155 presentations at conferences, universities and industry. He is a consultant to numerous chemical companies. He has received AIChE’s NAMF Award for Sustained Contributions to Mixing Research & Practice, and has been elected to Tau Beta Pi as an eminent engineer. He was a Fulbright Senior Scholar and SERC Visiting Fellow at the University of Birmingham (UK).

Dr. Calabrese is a Fellow of the AIChE and is a founding member of the North American Mixing Forum. He has previously served as President, Vice President, Treasurer, National Program Chair and MPC of the 15th Biennial North American Mixing Conference for the North American Mixing Forum. He is an international editor for Chem. Eng. Res. & Design (I. Chem. E.,UK).  He also heads the High Shear Mixing Research Program at Maryland. This industrially supported consortium consists of 12 members including chemical companies, equipment manufacturers and other organizations. 

Professor Calabrese has received several teaching awards from the University of Maryland. These include the College of Engineering 's Outstanding Teacher Award for junior faculty, the AIChE Student Chapter Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Poole & Kent Teaching Award for senior faculty.
