Special Issue of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research to commemorate the 65th                                      Birthday of Professor W. Harmon Ray (University of Wisconsin, retired; Prof. Choi’s Ph.D.                                       advisor ) has been published recently (Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 44(8), 2005).

                          Harmon received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Rice University in 1963 and                                    his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1966, working under the

                          Supervision of Prof. Rutherford Aris as his Ph.D. advisor. After graduation, Harmon served on                                  the faculties at the Univ of Waterloo, SUNY, and the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison (1976-                                           2003). During his tenure as a faculty member, he supervised 30 M.S. and 53 Ph.D. students.

                          Harmon made significant contributions to the following research fields: (1) polymer modeling

                          and polymer reactor engineering, (2) computer-aided reactor modeling and reactor

                          engineering, (3) feedback control and state estimation, (4) particle technology.

 

                          Prof. Choi’s contribution to the special issue of IECR: Modeling of solid state polymerization

                          Of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (Y. Ye, B. Machado, K.Y. Choi, J.H. Kim and B.G. Woo),

                          Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., 44(8), 2494-2505.

 

                          Special issue of the Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering has been published in honor of

                          Retirement of Prof. Hyun-Ku Rhee (Seoul National University, Korea) who was Prof. Choi’s

                          M.S. advisor (1976-1978) [K.J.Ch.E., March 2003—Special Commemorative Issue]. Prof.

                          Rhee is well known in the area of adsorption theories, catalytic reaction engineering, and                                          polymer reaction engineering. He served as President of Korean Institute of Chemical

                          Engineers and chaired numerous international conferences and symposia. Prof. Rhee                                              received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Seoul National University in 1962, and

                          His Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota (1968) with Prof. Neal

                          Amundson as Ph.D. advisor. It is quite a coincident that Prof. Choi worked for Prof. Ray and

                          Prof. Rhee, both from the Univ. of Minnesota, for his graduate studies. Prof. Ray and Prof.                                       Rhee were also classmates at the Univ. of Minnesota.
