Fluid and Particle Dynamics in an Aerosol Virtual Impactor

Instantaneous isosurfaces of the second invariant of velocity gradient tensor from a Large Eddy Simulation

Objective
to understand the physics of virtual impaction and develop models to design next-generation Virtual Impactors.

Methods
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Lagrangian Particle Tracking (LPT).

Results
Models to (a) predict aerosol transport, (b) identify fluid structures responsible for particle classification.

Future Work:
Study shear layer instability and coherent structures.
