The University of Maryland's student chapter of the Electrochemical Society (ECS) received one of two 2014 ECS Chapters of Excellence Awards. The group was recognized at the plenary session of the 226th Meeting of the Electrochemical Society, held in conjunction with the Sociedad de Eletroquímica meeting in Cancun, Mexico in October.

Founded in 2011, the UMD student chapter is the society’s newest, but has already had an impact on education and research through its outreach activities and presentations at ECS conferences. Its diverse membership includes students from the Departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE), Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Chemistry & Biochemistry, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The group is advised by Professor Eric Wachsman (MSE/ChBE), director of the University of Maryland Energy Research Center.

In 2013, the chapter won ECS’ inaugural Outstanding Student Chapter Award.
