Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering alumnus Thomas D. Murphy (B.S. '57) has received the Frank W. Reinhart Award from the ASTM International Committee on Standards. He was honored for his leadership and service in terminology standardization.

Formed in 1898 and originally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM International is now a worldwide organization that provides technical standards and best practices for materials and a variety of services and products, helping to ensure quality and safety in the global marketplace. Murphy has served on several ASTM committees addressing topics as diverse as statistical quality control, pesticides, and pharmaceutical products, and has previously received an Award of Merit and election to fellowship for his work.

When not working with ASTM, Murphy is a private consultant and the principal of T.D. Murphy Statistical Consulting LLC, which he founded in 1995 after 25 years of experience in quality control and chemical research and development for Hercules Inc. and the American Cyanamid Company. Murphy specializes in advising clients in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and consumer products industries.
