Pancreatic islet cells from pigs are encapsulated in ultra-pure alginate beads for delivery of insulin to type-I diabetic patients upon demand. Implantation of these microcapsules eliminates frequent, painful insulin injections as well as glucose measurements. Encapsulation hides implanted islet cells from being recognized and attacked by the patient's immune system. Professor Wang's research group, in collaboration with the FDA, investigates how macrophage responds to minute levels of cytotoxins in alginate. |
Graduate research assistantships typically support qualified Ph.D. students. Graduate fellowships are available on a competitive basis to both entering and continuing Ph.D. students. Typically only those Ph.D. students who enter the program in the Fall semester are eligible for fellowships. We are unable to provide financial support to students in our master’s degree program.
