The field of aerosol science is a versatile one, with very diverse applications. The topics in this seminar deal with specific examples of use of aerosols in two key areas, namely Nanoparticle Synthesis and Medical Devices for pulmonary drug delivery. Nanoparticle production using a combustion & aerosol mediated process is described, with focus on control of particle size, morphology, and crystallinity. In the area of Medical Devices, the use of aerosols for pulmonary drug delivery is discussed. The practical challenges of developing an efficacious inhalation therapy for both local and systemic applications for patient populations ranging from adults to infants are described. A brief overview of the functional and quality requirements when designing and producing medical devices and pharmaceuticals is provided. In closing, the progression of the speakers areas of research, and the synergy that enables it will be presented.
