Challenge Issues of Electrochemical Power Sources in Energy Storage Applications

Yong Yang
Professor
State Key Lab for Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces
Department of Chemistry
Xiamen University, China

The recent development of electric vehicles and smart grids has pushed electrochemical power sources to a very important position in energy storage applications. However, before safe and stable electrochemical energy systems can be applied on a large scale, several key issues should be totally solved. In this talk, some challenge issues of electrochemical systems as competent energy storage systems in the large-scale applications will be analyzed. Some recent progress in my lab in the study of high energy density batteries, such as the Li-air battery and the Li-CFx battery, will be presented.

About the Speaker

Dr. Yong Yang is a distinguished professor in the Department of Chemistry at Xiamen University and an Acting Director of the Engineering Research Center for Electrochemical Technology, Ministry of Education, China. He received a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry (Electrochemistry) from Xiamen University in 1992. From 1992 to 1997, he began his career as an assistant professor and was promoted to an associate professor and full professor in both the university's State Key Lab for Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces and the Department of Chemistry. From 1997 to 1998, he worked as a visiting professor at the Physical & Theoretical Chemistry Lab at Oxford University, U.K. He was the recipient of the 1999 Outstanding Young Scholar Research Award from National Natural Science Foundation of China. His research interests mainly focus on new electrode/electrolyte materials, electrode reaction mechanism and in-situ characterization techniques for electrochemical energy systems, including Li-ion batteries and fuel cells. More than 100 of his papers have been published in high impact journals, and he holds 11 patents. He has given more than 20 invited talks in international meetings. He is also an active member of Asian and Chinese electrochemical Societies.
