Multifunctional 3D Nanoarchitectures for Energy Storage and Conversion
Presented by Jeffrey W. Long
Research Chemist
Naval Research Laboratory
Portable power sources―batteries, fuel cells, electrochemical capacitors, photoelectrochemical cells―must optimally balance multiple functions such as ionic and electronic conductivity, molecular mass transport, and electron-transfer kinetics. This presentation will describe ongoing research in the Advanced Electrochemical Materials Section at the Naval Research Laborotory that is focussed on the design and fabrication of energy storage and conversion devices from a new perspective: Assembling the appropriate functional requirements using nanoscale building blocks into three-dimensional nanoarchitectures. Rethinking power in 3D and on the nanoscale offers an opportunity to improve the performance metrics of these alternative-energy critical yet mature devices.
